A high school junior from Stayton, Oregon never thought he would be able to get the amount of retweets required to get Las Vegas showgirl Mariah Rivera to come to his prom as his date.
Before 16-year-old Austin Moore even got close to his goal, his plans were quashed by his school’s attendee age policy – no one over the age of 19 can attend Regis High School’s prom.
“Austin’s not in trouble,” Principal Scott Coulter told KGW. “We just laughed about it and I said this just isn’t going to happen.”
“She is, like, 30, I guess,” said Moore. “I wasn’t really thinking about that at the time. I was throwing a shot in the dark.”
The shot in the dark began late February when Moore decided to send Rivera, who is a cousin of a friend, a message over Instagram inviting her to prom as a joke. Rivera accepted, on a condition of 10,000 retweets.
Moore began a Twitter campaign to get the retweets and even got some celebrity support from entertainment writer Robin Leach.
The married model and showgirl told the Las Vegas Sun that she was flattered, “although a little embarrassing. He’s not even old enough to see our show.”
“I think it would’ve been cool, when I have children to tell them: Yeah, I took a model and she was in my prom group and I had all my friends,” said Moore.
The short-lived saga won’t end in heartbreak.
Austin is taking, and says he has always planned to take, his long time girlfriend Alyssa.
