WATCH: Dramatic rescue of residents and dogs in huge California apartment fire

Two firefighters from the Modesto Fire Department were recognized for their actions for a dramatic rescue that occurred over Valentine’s Day weekend.

A fire engulfed a two-storey apartment complex in Modesto, California displacing around 16 of its residents and gutting eight units. Some were injured but no one was killed.

Among those rescued were 39-year-old Tammy Dobbins and her 67-year-old mother Delores Dobbins and their two dogs.

In a dramatic video released by the fire department, the women can be seen leaning out from Delores’ second floor bathroom window.

Police rolled up large trash bins below the window, encouraging them to jump to safety.

Before they save themselves, the women drop their dogs into the bins as emergency personnel pull the canines out into safety.

Then, firefighters Jesse Miguel and Jason Wyatt raise a ladder to the window, carrying each woman down one by one.

“A lot of firefighters don’t like the recognition, that’s not what we do it for,” Miguel told KCRA. “But it’s a good feeling. I feel like we did a good job.”

The men were awarded certificates of commendation at a City Council meeting Tuesday night as Delores sang their praises.

“These guys have got to be the toughest, bravest guys I’ve ever seen,” she said.
