Alberta man heartbroken over theft of valuable bronze statues

CALGARY – Police in Olds, Alberta are appealing to the public to try to solve the robbery of several bronze statues from a local business that’s been open since 1958.

Owner David Bell says he’s been collecting western art for 15 years, and keeps many of the pieces at his farm equipment supply store. He says the stolen goods were bronze, limited edition statues worth $25,000.

“I got [my first bronze statue] from my wife as a Christmas present…and I’ve got the bug ever since,” said Bell.

“They all have a western theme. I’m not into modern art…we live in the west, we live in Alberta, we have rolling hills, we have livestock—the western theme.”

Olds RCMP say around 3:10 a.m. Friday morning, RH Bell and Sons had a rock thrown through the front door, and “unknown persons” stole the statues from the store.

“I knew right away what had happened,” said Bell. “Shocking and disappointing.”

“People don’t typically steal items, especially this unique, to keep at their house and look at every day,” said Olds RCMP Cpl. Mike Black. “It’s not a run-of-the-mill, everyday theft.”

No vehicle description is available, though it’s believed one was needed for the theft given the weight of the statues.

Anyone with information that may lead to an arrest and location of the statues are asked to call Olds RCMP at 403-556-3324 or Crime Stoppers. Police are canvassing pawn shops and watching eBay and Kijiji to see if the statues re-appear.
