REGINA – Ride on Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) buses? Your fare is going up next month – the second increase in less than a year.

STC announced Friday fares will be going up on March 2. The CEO of the company, Shawn Grice, says the increase is to off-set the subsidy they get from the provincial government.

On average, passengers can expect to pay 4.5 per cent more for a one-way trip. For example, a ticket between Regina and Saskatoon, a distance of 262 kilometres (163 miles), will increase $2.20 from the current $49.00 to $51.20 plus tax.

The company last increased fares on Aug. 1, 2014 by an average of 5.5 per cent. STC cited higher gas prices as one of the reasons for that increase.

Officials say one way passengers can offset the cost of riding the bus is to buy a frequent rider card for $30.00, which gives a 20 per cent discount off every adult or student ticket purchased for a one-year period.
