WINNIPEG — It’s no longer placing a bet at a slot machine or sporting event.
Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries is expanding its list of gambling options just in time for one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.
The provincial gaming site Playnow.com has started novelty and entertainment online betting. With the 87th Academy Awards set for Sunday, some Manitobans could be cashing in this awards season.
“Its it’s a great opportunity to capitalize on the excitement the entertainment and the thrill of watching the Oscars,” Chris Fairclough said Thursday.
Oddsmakers have their picks in place. From there, you can see how each category’s nominees are ranked. Players can chose who they think will win the award, and bet anything from 10 cents to hundreds of dollars.
“In Manitoba we have seen tens of thousands of local Manitobans registered on the site – and seen thousands of dollars on Academy Awards,” Fairclough said.
Global News spoke to several organizations about the expansion. Those outreach organizations who deal directly with gambling and addiction say this is another avenue for those who can’t control their gambling habits, and there is 24-hour help.
