Police accuse friend of killing Christophur Baur, hiding body

WINNIPEG – The search for a missing Winnipeg man has come to a bizarre and gruesome conclusion.  Police say Christophur Baur, who disappeared more a month ago, was murdered by a friend and his body hidden in a north end home.

Monday, detectives were still inside the Magnus Avenue house piecing together what happened.

38-year old James John Morris lived there but is now behind bars, accused of killing Baur January 3rd and hiding his body for six weeks.

“Chris was the nicest guy you would meet,” said Susan, Baur’s friend for the past 15 years who didn’t want her last name used, “he had so many friends, he was kind, he would do anything for you, it’s just shocking somebody would do this to him.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Baur attended Susan’s wedding in 2008.

The two were texting each other on January 2nd, the day before Baur disappeared.

But sometime on January 3rd, Baur went to Morris’ house on Magnus Avenue.  Police say the men were friends but something sparked a fight, Morris allegedly used a weapon, knocking Baur unconscious.  Baur later died, but police only found his body Sunday in the house.

Morris’ neighbour says they spoke last week and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, “I’m shocked, I know Jim as a neighbour, he’s a very good man, he worked for his family a family man.”

More than three weeks after Baur was reported missing, his car was found just a couple blocks away on Manitoba Avenue.  But police believe it was moved after Baur was killed, likely to throw detectives off.

“This incident was solved by knocking on doors,” said Constable Eric Hofley, “good old fashion investigative techniques.”

The neighbour says Morris had a partner and two young children, but they moved out in December.
