Couples young and old celebrate the day of love

WINNIPEG – Winnipeggers young and old found different ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Saturday. In the last few years, technology and social media has drastically changed the way couples meet and interact. For example, Laurine Einfeld and her husband Jim have been together for almost 50 years and met through a friend.

“He phoned me, I was free that night, we went out, we did connect well in that I was the talkative one, he was the quiet one,” said Laurine.

Meanwhile, Alex Paradoski and his girlfriend Dominique Nadeau met on Tinder less than a year ago.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We had similar interests off the bat, things to talk about right when you meet them,” said Paradoski.

To Laurine, the idea of meeting on social media seems strange and said things were very different in the dating world when she met her husband.

“We were much less aggressive as women meeting men,” she said. “We kind of waited for them to ask us out.”

But in the younger dating scene, communicating and meeting on social media is common. For those who are a part of it, they say it still has a way of being romantic.

“I think it makes things more convenient, and it’s easier to communicate,” said Nadeau.

Young and old, couples celebrating around the city told Global News they look for similar things in a partner like trust, a good sense of humour and friendship.

And almost 50 years later, Laurine said the affection is still present.

“I give him a hug and a kiss every night and he gets one every morning and that’s pretty much been the whole story.”
