Festival du Voyageur kicks off in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — Forty-six years after the Winnipeg tradition first started and the buzz in the air at Festival du Voyageur seems just as exciting as day one.

Every February, western Canada’s largest winter festival attracts thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world to celebrate winter.

“This is my first time and I’m very glad for all of this… I want to be here the next year and the next year,” said snow sculptor Mario Gabriel Fernandez from Argentina.”It’s beautiful and the people here are so nice.”

International snow sculptors are selected to showcase their art at Festival Park, transforming basic blocks of snow into a winter wonderland for the 10 day event.

“Festival is about more than just music and dancing and food, it’s about visual art,” said Ginette Lavack Walters, executive director of Festival du Voyageur. “Creating those international ties and connections where we can appreciate someone else’s art as well.”

And organizers say they’re hoping to put Festival on the tourism map in a bigger way down the road, pushing the envelope to make Winnipeg the country’s “hottest” winter city.

“I would love eventually to see some overnight stays over at Voyaguer Park,” Lavack Walters. “Kind of like a bed and breakfast type of feel.”

Until then, it’s all about embracing the Winnipeg winter spirit.
