MONTREAL — McGill University’s Royal Victoria College Residence, an historic greystone building at the corner of University and Sherbrooke Streets, was evacuated Tuesday after flames were spotted on the building’s roof.
About 20 vehicles and 50 firefighters were called to the scene.
The four-storey building houses about 270 students.
Authorities confirmed that the buildings’ alarms were working, and students and staff were evacuated from the building without a problem.

Everyone was accounted for, and there were no reported injuries.
A spokesperson for the Montreal Fire Department has confirmed that the fire has been extinguished.
Founded in 1899, Royal Victoria College was originally the women’s college at McGill University.
According to the university, staff are working to arrange alternate accommodation for students displaced by the fire.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
