WATCH: Driver slams into alleged carjacker during wild police chase

TORONTO – A chaotic police chase in Australia last Thursday took an even wilder turn when one of the suspects allegedly tried to steal another motorist’s car on the freeway.

According to Australia’s Nine News network, Queensland Police began pursuing two suspects near Brisbane, following them until they crossed the state border into New South Wales.

There, New South Wales Police used spike strips to bring the stolen Mitsubishi Lancer they were driving to a halt.

A police helicopter camera captured the dramatic scene that unfolded next: the two men, shirtless but armed with automatic handguns, jumped out of the stolen vehicle in the middle of a busy highway.

Nine News reports that the two men then opened fire, both at the pursuing officers and at other motorists on the highway.

“Shots fired! Shots fired!” a police officer’s voice can he heard saying in the video recording.

The men then allegedly attempted to hijack another car, with one of the two suspects blocking the path of an oncoming dark blue sedan.

Except the driver didn’t slow down – instead, he hit the gas and sent the man spinning over the hood, his pistol sailing away as he fell to the asphalt.

Police eventually caught up to the two men and brought the chaotic chase to an end.

New South Wales police have charged the pair with attempted murder, in addition to the numerous charges of carjacking they face in both New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.
