SASKATOON – Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning south of Saskatoon for the Outlook, Watrous, Hanley, Kindersley, Rosetown and Biggar areas. The agency says freezing rain will start Friday evening and end overnight for the Kindersley and Outlook regions.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

In addition, a snowfall warning remains in effect for parts of central Saskatchewan from the Meadow Lake and Buffalo Narrows region through La Ronge, Prince Albert, Nipawin, Melfort and Canora areas.

In these areas 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is possible by Saturday evening.

Multiple waves of precipitation have moved through the region with one final wave expected Friday night into Saturday morning across the province.

Environment Canada recommends motorists be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

An additional 5 centimetres of snow is expected in Saskatoon on top of the amount that has already accumulated in the region.

An extreme cold warning is also in place for extreme northern parts of the province for wind chill values near minus 45.

The culprit of the blast of winter is a strong low-pressure system sitting in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of B.C. with an intense moisture feed that is driving in warm, moist air over top of the cold, Arctic air mass in place over the Prairies, squeezing out multiple pulses of moisture over the area.
