UPDATE – RCMP say a man has been apprehended in this investigation.
In a news release, Cst. Kris Clark says: “The individual believed responsible approached police and confirmed the contents of the package to be harmless. The 34-year-old Kelowna man was apprehended and transported to the hospital for any medical treatment he might require.”
Clark says there were no evacuations and only a small section of Lawrence Avenue was affected.
He adds in these situations police must respond with the highest risk assessment until the package is proven to be benign.
KELOWNA — Kelowna RCMP have cordoned off a section of Lawrence Avenue following the discovery of a suspicious package.
The package was found shortly after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, prompting officials to block Lawrence Avenue at Richter Street.
The package is just inside the gate of the parking lot of the British Columbia Dragoons barracks. A sergeant found the package as she was opening the gates to the barracks. She told her superiors the package appeared to be the size of a laptop computer, metallic in color, with wires sticking out.
The bomb squad from Vancouver has been called to the scene.
RCMP say it could be up to five hours before the bomb squad arrives.
