Calgary boy hit in intersection making a ‘miraculous’ recovery

A 12-year-old boy’s recovery after he was struck by a vehicle last week is being described as miraculous.

Ben Jones was walking to school last Wednesday morning, when he was hit by a Dodge SUV on 4th Street at Huntstrom Drive northeast.

“I just remember walking out the door and turning off the lights, and then waking up in the hospital, and I couldn’t really remember anything that happened,” said Ben Jones from his home on Monday.

And now, incredibly, he’s home and continuing to recover, after spending just a few days in hospital. But there are lingering effects.

“My head hurts a lot; it hurts to walk sometimes,” said Ben.

His mom said her son is also having nightmares.

“We don’t know if they’re flashbacks. You know, if he doesn’t have pillows supporting his body he wakes up crying in pain.”

Some people who live in the area believe the intersection where Ben was struck is dangerous, and cars are routinely speeding.

A petition to install an LED light has more than 300 signatures.

The area councillor agrees better lighting at the intersection could make it safer.

“I think with an LED flashlight, it would help a lot; at least make people aware that ‘Hey, there’s a pedestrian'”, said Sean Chu, Councillor for Ward 4.

Nearly a week after the collision, police have yet to lay any charges.

“We do know that he didn’t hit the brakes. Not even when impact happened, and that is – that’s horrifying to hear that,” said Jones.

She said she hopes sharing Ben’s story will encourage drivers to pay attention and slow down.
