UPDATE: RCMP have identified the person who died in a crash on the Trans Canada Highway west of Salmon Arm on Sunday as 55-year-old Mary Gould of Sorrento. Police say she was driving a passenger vehicle westbound about 15 kilometres west of Salmon Arm when her vehicle collided head-on with a semi truck; Gould died on impact. The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries. Investigators believe weather and road conditions were factors in the crash.
One person is dead in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 1 northwest of Salmon Arm.
RCMP Sgt. Brian Nightingale says the accident happened around 11:30 a.m., when a semi-trailer collided with a car moving in the opposite direction.
The name of the victim and which vehicle they were in has not been disclosed. Two other people were injured in the crash, but their conditions are unknown.
The highway was closed for several hours while crews assessed the collision. It is now open to single lane alternating traffic with a 20-minute delay. A detour is available via Highway 97 and 97A.
Nightingale told CFJC that it’s likely the snowy conditions played a role in the crash.
“We don’t have that many collisions on curves in winter conditions unless it is partially due to the slippery conditions,” he said, emphasizing that the investigation is in its early stages.
Elsewhere on interior highways, Drive BC is reporting Highway 5 and 97C both have compact snow with slippery sections. There have been no major accidents to date, but at least one truck on the Coquihalla has overturned today.
