Representing B.C. at Canada Winter Games a family tradition for Jordy Bellerive

For 15-year-old Jordy Bellerive, hockey has always been a family affair. His brother Matt plays for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, his sister Brielle plays on Canada’s Women’s Under-18 team, and his great uncle is a former NHLer.

“It’s been in my blood,” says Bellerive.

Bellerieve, who grew up in North Vancouver, now hones his skills daily as part of the Okanagan Hockey Academy. And he’s already surpassing expectations.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“He’s got an NHL-calibre shot,” says Malcolm Cameron of the Okanagan Hockey Academy. “I haven’t come across anybody as physically gifted as him.”

Selected second overall in the 2014 WHL draft by the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Bellerive is averaging a goal a game with the Okanagan Hockey Academy’s Midget Prep White team.

It’s no wonder he was asked to be a part of Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

Bellerive’s brother and sister have both played for Team BC and Jordy is proud to follow in their footsteps.

“It’s one of those dreams that you dream of growing up as a little kid,” he says.

While the coveted prospect may be in the spotlight at the Canada Winter Games, which run from Feb. 13 to March 1, Bellerive is only concerned about having his team reach the podium.

“It’s not an individual thing for me,” he says. “It’s all about winning the gold for my province.”
