Open burning planned in Central Okanagan regional parks

The province of B.C. has announced category 2 and 3 open-burning bans for the Southeast Fire Centre. For the Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the Okanagan, category 2 fires are allowed, but category 3 fires are prohibited. Camp fires are still allowed in both fire centres. Contributed

The Regional District of the Central Okanagan wants residents to be aware of upcoming fuel modification projects and plans for open burning until the end of April. Bruce Smith with the regional district says the fuel modification projects will take place in three regional parks.

Smith says trees killed due to vandalism will be burned near the King Road entrance to Kalamoir Regional Park. Trees that were damaged during the 2012 Trepanier wilfire will be disposed of at Trepanier Creek Greenway Regional Park and Rose Valley Regional Park.

He adds the BC Wildfire Management Branch will conduct controlled burning of debris piles in Rose Valley Regional Park above Bear Creek Road.

He says trails near work areas might be closed temporarily. Park users are asked to watch for signage about closed trails.

“Debris pile burning will be conducted in accordance with air quality and open burning regulations when open burning is allowed for qualified property owners in the region,” says Smith.
