CALGARY  – It is western Canada’s tallest building and climbing to the top is no small feat.

A group of Calgary firefighters plan to tackle the Bow Building – and on Thursday they had a practice run.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Members of the Calgary Firefighter Benevolent Fund climbed more than 1200 steps, dressed in full firefighting gear.

In May, professional, volunteer and retired firefighters from around the world will join Calgary – and test their stamina on the Bow staircase.

Starting at 3400 feet above sea level, the climb will be the highest elevation stair-climb in North America.

Organizers hope Calgarians will sponsor firefighters who have committed to the climb.

“They are dads, uncles and neighbours… I would like to see children and teachers in schools get on board and sponsor a firefighter,” said Kathy Blas.

All money raised will support the Wellspring Calgary Cancer Support Centre.

The climb runs Sunday, May 3rd.
