Nanaimo RCMP looking for bear spray wielding suspect

An alleged thief in Nanaimo managed to elude capture thanks to a can of bear spray.

According to the RCMP, a young man was spotted near a car. The vehicle’s owner, a 30-year-old man, yelled at the suspect, who fled the scene. The owner chased and eventually grabbed the alleged thief.  But the suspect managed to get away after pulling out a can of bear spray and hitting the owner of the car with several bursts.

The male suspect, who is described as Caucasian, 25 to 30 years of age, 5’11” tall and wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a grey hat, was last seen running eastbound on St. Patrick towards Waddington Rd.

Items taken from the vehicle include an Acer laptop and the vehicle owner’s jacket.

Police have not been able to locate the suspect and asks anyone who may have more information on the incident to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
