Crown and Attorney conclude murder trial closing statements

REGINA – Both defense and Crown attorneys presented their closing statements today in the jury trial of Adam Cyr. Cyr has been charged with second degree murder in the death of Regina toddler Natalia Shingoose in 2012.

The defense has maintained throughout the course of the trial that Cyr did not kill the little girl and claim he was framed.

The Crown and the defense agree the injuries inflicted on Shingoose were not accidental. The toddler was found in her home on June 21, 2012 only days before her third birthday. She sustained blunt force trauma: she had six broken ribs, a torn lung and liver, a broken collar bone and bruises all over her body.

Monday, the defense re-stated their claim that there is no direct evidence to convict Cyr. Defense attorney Bob Hrycan told the jury there is adequate evidence to believe Cyr has been framed by the girl’s mother, Amanda Trevors, and Trevors’ long-time friend, Matthew Bennett. Hrycan told the jury it was Bennett who killed Shingoose.

The defense said the video of Bennett during his police interrogation showed he was “explosive” and unreasonably” agitated. Hrycan also suggested to the jury both Bennett and Trevors’ testimonies revealed inconsistencies and contradictions.

The prosecution took an hour to make their closing address. They pointed to evidence that Cyr was seen near a garbage bin in the back alley and suggested Cyr killed the toddler and hid items used in the murder in the garbage bin.

They also said parts of Cyr’s testimony were not credible, and he left out details in his police statement that he later revealed on the stand.

The prosecution claimed the cross-examination of Trevors by the defense was littered with suggestion, innuendo and accusations – and that Cyr fabricated a story about Trevors being a drug dealer.

The jury will begin deliberating on Wednesday.
