REGINA – One Saskatchewan woman wants to help people living in Canada’s north struggling to pay for the astronomical cost of some groceries.

Megan Clake started a Saskatchewan chapter of Helping our Northern Neighbours on Facebook. The initiative collects groceries and ships them to people in Canada’s north.

Drop-off locations have been set up in several Saskatchewan communities, including Regina and Saskatoon.

Clake said she was motivated to start the group after seeing photos of a carton of juice for $15 in the territories.

“These are Canadians. These aren’t people somewhere halfway around the world,” said Clake. “68 per cent of the families are experiencing food insecurity. That’s massive. That’s more than five times the Canadian average.”

More than 400 people have joined the chapter’s Facebook group since it started last Sunday. About three parcels of food have been collected so far.
