REGINA – The City of Regina has saved about $500,000 so far this winter thanks to a calmer than usual winter.
“When you look at the stats, they’re virtually identical in terms of snow received at this time period compared to how much we received last year,” said Chris Warren, the city’s manager of winter maintenance.
A snow dumping later in the season combined with higher temperatures contributed significantly. However, that doesn’t mean crews aren’t busy, Warren added.
“There’s a little bit of snowpack on some of these residential roads as they haven’t been really plowed this year at all, so we’re having a little bit of difficulty with those,” said Warren.
On Saturday, Regina was one of several communities in central and southern Saskatchewan under a freezing rain warning.
Local police responded to 14 collisions between 9 and 11 a.m., three of which resulted in minor injuries. Officers were also dispatched to two reports of people failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
