VANCOUVER – A dangerous offender hearing is expected to begin this morning for a man convicted in the deaths of two teenage girls, 17-year-old Martha Jackson Hernandez and 16-year-old Kayla Lalonde.
Martin Tremblay was found guilty in 2013 of two counts of criminal negligence causing death. The court heard the girls died of a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol, which Tremblay provided.
Soon after the convictions, the Crown sought to have Tremblay declared a dangerous offender. That designation could result in him being jailed indefinitely.
The hearing began at 10 a.m. in the BC Supreme Court and is expected to last several weeks. Tremblay is also facing a second trial in which he is alleged to have committed sex offences against teenage girls.
In 2011, Vancouver Police included Tremblay on a list of men believed to be preying on women in the poverty-stricken neighbourhood where serial killer Robert Pickton once found his victims.
