PENTICTON — An ordinary hotel banquet room has been transformed into a theatre with stadium style seating and an orchestra pit. Soundstage Productions, a community theatre group, is putting on an ambitious show, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, this week at the Penticton Lakeside Resort.
“It’s starting with nothing and turning it into something that’s really quite incredible,” says artistic director Lynne Leydier.
The musical is about the story of Sweeney Todd who has been unjustly banished in Victorian England. He returns to England as with a vengeance and joins forces with Mrs. Lovett.
This production of Sweeney Todd started with a script and 30 volunteer actors who are all enthusiastic about bringing the dark, yet lively, story to the stage.
Under Leydier’s guidance, the cast and crew have been hard at work since September.
“We create everything from the seating, to the lights, costumes, sets and there’s live music.”
The show begins its run this Wednesday night. The final curtain falls on Saturday, January 17.
