LAS VEGAS — Canadian R&B artist The Weeknd was arrested in Las Vegas after police say he hit an officer in the head.
Las Vegas Police Officer Laura Meltzer says 24-year-old Abel Tesfaye of Toronto was arrested early Saturday in a Las Vegas Strip hotel on suspicion of misdemeanor battery of a protected person. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center, but wasn’t listed on the jail roster on Monday.
Meltzer says police, trying to break up a fight, took Tesfaye into an elevator, where he allegedly “punched the officer at the side of his head with a closed fist.”
She says it doesn’t appear that the officer was seriously hurt.
The Weeknd was scheduled for a concert Friday at Drai’s Nightclub. He is featured on Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder.”
The Weeknd was recently honoured with the Allan Slaight Award at the Canada’s Walk of Fame gala.
