Scouts from Atlantic provinces gather in Moncton to learn new skills

MONCTON – Scout members gathered in Moncton this weekend to learn social interaction and winter camping skills as part of the annual Roventure weekend.

The event was designed to unite Scouts from across the Atlantic provinces and brought together 65 youths from ages 13 to 26.

Scout Kayla Williams came from Saint John.

“Even though I was thrown into a group of people where I had no idea I made friends really quickly it was great,” she said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Maggie MacPhee, the deputy council youth commissioner for special events, said young people need to learn to interact with new people.

“As great as your group is, you can get really tired of them,” she said. “I think an important aspect of staying in Scouts is constantly introducing them to new things and new people.”

Scouts also help out in the community, so on Saturday, they collected food for the West End Food Bank.

On Sunday, they delivered about 20 bags of food to the food bank.

Ben MacMichael, who speaks for the food bank, said their contribution will help a lot of people in need.

“Just after Christmas, we kind of get into a lull and families are still hungry and heating bills kick in,” he said.”So this food is a big deal.”
