Moncton businesses that depend on snow see sales pick up

MONCTON – Businesses that depend on snow in the Greater Moncton Area are hoping sales will pick up following a green Christmas.

Peter Rees heads sales at Toys for Big Boys. He says snow blowers are a big part of winter profits.

“When you get heavy wet snow, our competition tends to flop by the wayside and we step up,” he said, noting generators are also in high demand when bad weather cuts power.

“Everybody’s probably familiar with the grid failures that’s been going on out there and people scramble when they lose power,” he said.

Not far away, at Mike’s Bike Shop where they sell skis, Rick Snyder said sales picked up shortly after the snow was falling.

“It was great. The customers started yesterday at noon,” he said.

That’s what brought Caroline Humar-Bennett out to his shop to buy skis for her son.

“We’re definitely encouraged to go out tomorrow with all the nice fluffy snow we can go skiing on,” she said.

Snyder said despite the lack of snow in December, sales were strong. But he admits sales after Christmas depend on snowy weather.

“Since Christmas, it’s been a concern because there’s no snow and when you’re selling product people can’t use it’s a big deal,” he said.
