A bus driver’s terrifying ride through the windshield of his bus serves as a strong reminder why you should always wear a seatbelt.
Video released by the Albuquerque, New Mexico transit department shows the shocking moments before, during, and after a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup truck on January 2nd.
In the video, we see the bus driver proceeding sans seatbelt on what looks to be an uneventful trip – he even whistles as he passes the time.
As he approaches the intersection of Central Avenue and Unser Boulevard, a pickup truck suddenly smashes into the side of the bus at high speed.
The initial impact is jarring, and the bus driver fights to regain control of the bus as it careens out of control.
Then there’s a second impact even worse than the first, as the out-of-control bus slams into a structure on the side of the road.
The impact of the crash is so powerful it throws the bus driver through the windshield.
KOAT-7 News in Albuquerque reports that both drivers were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Luckily, there were no other passengers on the bus at the time of the collision.
Police believe the driver of the pickup truck ran a red light, leading to the accident.
Traffic was delayed for hours as police tried to move the wrecked bus, which had struck the roadside structure with such force that there were concerns it might collapse.
As for the bus driver, police and local news agencies have not identified him; however he is expected to make a full recovery.
