TORONTO – Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man in his 40s was shot during an armed robbery attempt at a variety store near the St. James Town neighbourhood of Toronto Wednesday morning.
Police say they received a call at around 8:30 a.m. for a hold-up in progress at 591 Sherbourne Street and a report of a man with a gun.
The Special Investigations Unit said in a media release that an “interaction” occurred after officers arrived on scene.
The male suspect was then taken to hospital in life-threatening condition with gun shot wounds to his leg and torso.
The area surrounding Sherbourne and Huntley streets remain closed for the police investigation.
The SIU probes situations involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
