Will Chris Christie bring his awkward-hugging, lucky-sweater-wearing self to Green Bay?

TORONTO – Will New Jersey Governor Chris Christie be in Green Bay this weekend to cheer on his beloved Dallas Cowboys? After Sunday’s awkwardness, let’s hope so.

In case you missed it, Christie was on hand for the Cowboys’ 24-20 comeback wild-card victory over the Detroit Lions and he was sure hard to miss.

TV crews captured the governor’s boyish celebrations as he bounced around in the Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones’ VIP box.

Things got awkward when Christie, dressed in an orange “good luck” sweater, was denied a high-five, then went in for an uncomfortable-looking hug with Jones and his son, Stephen.

Here’s a GIF for an explainer.

“It was pandemonium in there,” Christie said during a radio interview with New York’s Boomer & Carton show. “It’s difficult to describe the level of intensity in the Jones box.”

It wasn’t the first time Christie has shown up in Jones’ box, nor the first time his display of affection for the team and its owner has drawn withering fire on social media and among radio talkers. Christie’s high-five of Jones after the Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles last month was seen by some in South Jersey and elsewhere as rubbing it in.

But the real question is, will we get to see this awkward display again on Sunday? Christie told the Boomer & Carton show he hopes to attend the game in Green Bay.

“Believe me, I would take all the abuse that I’m taking from some of these folks in return for Cowboys playoff wins,” he said. “As a fan, that’s what it’s all about. … Just because I’m Governor of New Jersey doesn’t mean that I change who I root for — that’s it.”
