Search continues for missing man, believed to be hiking on North Shore

WATCH: Heavy snow is not helping efforts to find a 21-year-old man missing for five days now. Search crews are now focusing their search on the North Shore mountains. Rumina Daya has more.

VANCOUVER – Twenty-one-year-old Liang Jin, who also goes by Leon Joy, has not been seen or heard from since New Year’s Eve.

Vancouver Police say he texted his dad on the morning of Dec. 31, 2014, and said he was going hiking. However, he gave no indication where.

Police say they found evidence on Jin’s computer that suggest he went to the North Shore mountains. Rescue crews explored the Hanes Valley area Monday, but weather conditions made the search challenging. They resumed the search at first light on Tuesday with multiple helicopter and ground crews. It is believed Jin may have taken the Hanes Loop Trail, but it is still unclear.

Allan McMordie of North Shore Rescue said weather makes the search “very difficult because of the cloud level. We’re trying to get helicopters up to get our guys up a little higher and search around to see if we can see any footprints or any evidence that someone is around.”

Jin is described as Asian, 5’6″ tall, with a slim build. It is believed he may be wearing a black Salomon-brand backpack with white stripes on the straps. Police say he may have travelled by public transit as his bicycle was found by his family in his downtown apartment.
