Woman, child feared dead in Saskatchewan First Nation house fire

AHTAHKAKOOP FIRST NATION, Sask. – Police believe a missing woman and child may be in the ruins of a Saskatchewan First Nations house fire. The fire happened Monday on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation.

Four people were originally thought to be in the two-storey home when first responders arrived at the blaze. Two men managed to escape and were treated for smoke inhalation.

A 61-year-old woman and 10-year-old boy were reported missing and have not been located. Their names have not been released and the family and community is asking for privacy.

Investigators are hoping the site has cooled enough for an examination of the scene. The investigation will be done by officials from the Ministry of Government Relations along with the coroner’s office.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, police don’t believe it was suspicious.
