WINNIPEG — It’s beginning to feel a lot more like a Winnipeg winter. After being spoiled with an above seasonal start to winter, it was a shock to wake up to -30 temperatures with the windchill on Sunday.
“We’ve gone back to our normal December and January types of weather,” said weather specialist Jay Anderson.
It’s the first time this season we have seen extreme windchill values overnight nearing -40. The patterns show we likely won’t see the same extreme temperatures we experienced last year in the weeks ahead said Anderson. Temperatures will fluctuate between slightly below or above seasonal for the first month of the new year.
“While it’s below normal right now this is what a typical mid winter cold spell would be like,” said Anderson.
Meanwhile, over at The Forks the temperatures are finally low enough that they can start working on the river walk.
“This is actually a really good temperature for us right now,” said Kristin Pauls who works in marketing. “We’re working on the red river trail, so now that means our crews can go out and get things ready.”
The Forks closed the skating rink under the canopy last week when it warmed up. Now it’s expected to remain frozen for the remainder of winter.
