SASKATOON – After a well above seasonal start to winter weather in Saskatoon, a big cool down is upon us as we head through the Christmas holiday finish line. The warmest day of the next seven will be Wednesday.

There is a slight risk of freezing rain overnight into the early morning hours of Christmas Eve, but that is predominantly expected to stay south of the city.

Temperatures on Wednesday are expected to rise to around minus 3 with mostly cloudy skies, flurries to start and finish the day and some sunny breaks possible mid-day.

Saskatoon has seen freezing drizzle intermittently lately and the roads are expected to remain as slippery as they presently are.

A light layer of snow overnight will cause the ice that is on the ground to become hidden and caution is advised for anyone travelling over the holidays.

Christmas Day is when the big cool down kicks in. The mercury will fall from around minus 7 around midnight to nearing the minus 20s by the evening.

As the cold air sinks in and a cold front slides through, the winds will also pick up. Santa may be up against some breezy conditions with gusts up to 40 km/h possible overnight into the early morning hours of Christmas Day.

The cold front will kick up a fairly good chance of flurries Christmas Day, which will make for a very picturesque scene in the Bridge City.

Environment Canada defines a “Perfect Christmas” as one that has at least one centimetre of snow on the ground and snow is falling from the sky. Saskatoon may very well fall into this category on Thursday.

Saskatoon will remain entrenched in the cold air for all of Boxing Day and into the weekend, finishing off 2014 with daytime highs in the minus teens and morning lows in the minus 20s.
