Charges laid in theft of vehicle with baby in back seat

CALGARY – Police have laid charges against a 21-year-old man accused of stealing a vehicle that had a baby in the back seat.

Police were called to the 10,000 block of Macleod Trail S.E. around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday.

The child’s mother had left her GMC Yukon running while she went inside a nearby store.

Police say the offender got inside the unlocked vehicle and took off without realizing there was a 10-month-old boy in a car seat in the back.

Police say they don’t believe the suspect indented to kidnap the baby.

Shortly after the vehicle was taken, the offender stopped in the 9800 block of Horton Road S.W. where he flagged down a passerby and asked them to call 911.

“There was no harm to the baby whatsoever,” says Duty Inspector Joel Matthews.

The offender was arrested at the scene.

“Lock your doors, don’t leave children in your car once you leave the car.”

“It could have been a very serious result,” added Matthews. “It could have been a lot different… so we’re very happy with the result.”

Police have charged Killick Donnie Hunter of no-fixed address with one count each of the following:

• Theft of a motor vehicle
• Operating a motor vehicle while unauthorized
• Driving while uninsured

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, February 9th, 2015.
