Brace for busy: peak travel time at Kelowna Airport

KELONWA – With just days before Christmas, holiday travelers are well on their way to their destinations.

“We have all hands on deck,” says Kelowna Airport media relations, Jenelle Hynes, “during this peak travel time we have a holiday travel plan in effect. We’ve got extra staff, we’ve got extra lines open.”

YLW is expecting nearly double the amount of passengers Sunday. An average day sees about 4,200 travelers but staff are bracing for more than 7,500.

Hynes has a few tips to avoid a travel headache:

– Get to the airport 90 minutes early for domestic and two hours early for international flight

– Put as much luggage as you can below board as carry-on can cause more delays getting through security

 – Don’t wrap your presents. If security can’t decipher what it is, they will unwrap it.

The busy season is the perfect year end present for the airport which has seen ridership go through the roof.

“We’re on our 23rd consecutive record breaking month and expect December to be our 24th, so it’s been busy,” says Hynes.

Sunday’s and Monday’s from now until the first week in January are forecast to be the busiest.
