‘Brown Christmas’ benefits Calgary businesses

CALGARY- While many Calgarians may be holding out hope for a white Christmas this year, local businesses and tourist attractions are thriving under the mild December temperatures this year.

But some business owners say they would still rather have fresh snow on the ground this holiday season.

“I’d rather it be white but it looks like it’s going to be a brown one,” said Ian Burridge of the Christmas Store.

Burridge says while sales have been steady, there’s something missing so far this Christmas.

“People are not as in the Christmas spirit as of yet,” said Burridge. “And there’s a week to go.”

Officials at Heritage Park say their “Once Upon A Christmas” event has fared well on weekends, thanks in part to the mild weather.

“There’s definitely a correlation,” said Barb Munro of Heritage Park. “And so we’re very happy this year that we have had a very nice past couple of weeks. It’s definitely impacted our numbers.”

The Calgary Zoo also says its Zoolights attraction has also benefited from the weather.

“When it does get to to be really, really cold you notice a lot fewer people come down for Zoolights,” said Larissa Mark of the Calgary Zoo.

Global News meteorologist Jordan Witzel says while it might not be a major snowfall, he does foresee Calgarians getting a white Christmas this year.

“I think we’ll get at least a little bit of a layer,” said Witzel. “Sometime there around Christmas there will be some white stuff on the ground.”
