Police in New Westminster are looking for a man in connection with a machete attack earlier this month.

The attack happened in the early morning hours of Dec.7 in the area of 7th and Belmont Streets.

Police say the suspect approached a car, with two people inside, near the exit of a parking lot in the area and started slashing at it with a machete.

The people in the car quickly drove out of the parking lot, but pulled over a short distance away to check the damage to their vehicle.

That’s when the suspect appeared again.

The man started slashing at one of the victims and tried to stab him before he was able to fend off his attacker and knock the machete loose. He received lacerations to his fingers and knee. The other person was not injured.

The suspect fled from the area, with the weapon, before police arrived.

He is still at large.

The victim says they don’t know the man, and the attack was completely unprovoked.

The attacker is described as Caucasian, 20-30 years old with a slim build.

He was wearing a grey sweatshirt with a white circle and white lettering on the front as well as running shoes with red soles and red laces.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the man in surveillance video to give them a call at 604-525-5411.
