TORONTO – An elderly man is dead and three other people are injured after fire broke out at a Toronto apartment.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene west of downtown (on Dunn Avenue near Queen Street West and Lansdowne Avenue) shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Fire officials say crews were confronted with heavy black smoke as they pulled one victim out of the 11th floor apartment unit, and a second victim was found in the hallway near the unit.
Paramedics say the elderly man was rushed to hospital without vital signs and was later pronounced dead.
Another victim, described as a man in his 50s, suffered life-threatening injuries, while a woman suffered serious smoke inhalation and a fourth person was treated for minor injuries.
Police are continuing to investigate and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to help determine the cause of the blaze.
