$21M in upgrades announced for Halifax Aerotech wastewater plant

HALIFAX – The Aerotech wastewater treatment plant near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport is getting a major upgrade.

The municipal, provincial and federal governments will all contribute funds to a project that will see the plant upgraded to comply with new federal wastewater systems effluent regulations.

Peter MacKay, the federal minister for the region, said the upgrades “will greatly improve the quality of [the plant’s] wastewater treatment as well as expand its capacity to better preserve the Johnson River and the Shubenacadie Basin river systems for years to come.”

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage said the project is necessary for the surrounding area to keep developing.

“Expansion of our airport and Aerotech Park have been on hold until wastewater facilities are upgraded to handle the increased demand,” he said. “This project will enable further development…which will expand the economic base and support regional growth.”

The $7-million contribution from the city will mean an increase in water bills for residents.

“It would certainly be a minor increase,” said Carl Yates, the general manager of Halifax Water. “A couple of percentages on the bill.”

Tenders for the project will be issued for the summer. Construction is scheduled to start next fall and the upgrades are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.
