Winnipeg –  They may not look like Santa Claus, but Manitoba Soldiers made Christmas brighter for dozens of families in the north end on Saturday.

“It brings a smile to everyone’s faces,” said MCpl Draper Houston, who spent the day delivering. “We have guys that come out every year for this and have been doing it for years.”

The soldiers were assisting the Christmas Cheer Board, delivering parcels of food and toys for families in need in military vehicles.

“I’m not working right now, but my husband is. Definitely this will be a great help,” said Ebelina Melizza, a mom and a new Canadian who received a package today.

The day was part of an annual tradition,  Parcel Push that began in 1984.

Exercise Parcel Push first began in recognition of the historical tie between the military the Christmas Cheer Board.

The intent of the board was to supply Christmas hampers and toys for the widows and orphans of the soldiers lost during World War One.

Each year, Soldiers of the Fort Garry Horse provide assistance organizing the warehouse with other volunteers and delivering hampers using military vehicles. This year they delivered over 200 parcels, doubling the number from last year. Houston anticipates the number will continue to grow, but it’s a day that is special for everyone involved.

“It makes you feel so good going out and delivering happiness to someone who may not necessarily have it every year,” said Houston.
