Iggy returns to Calgary and applauds Giordano’s rise

CALGARY- Jarome Iginla was back on familiar ground Thursday to face the Calgary Flames at home.

It’s only the second time he’s been back on Saddledome ice since the team traded him away.

This time, the star hockey forward made his return as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, his third team in just 20 months.

Before that, Iginla spent 16 years as a fan favourite in Calgary. Ten of those years Iginla spent as captain of the team.

Flames’ current captain, Mark Giordano, is leading a much younger team than Iginla ever played on.

The early season success is turning heads around the National Hockey League (NHL).

“I didn’t try to fill his shoes,” says Giordano. “I tried to bring my own game but the way he (Iginla) treated people, (I) tried to take that away from him.”

Iginla said he’s surprised at how the Flames are surpassing expectations and how Giordano is fifth in league scoring.

“But not a surprise he’s (Giordano) one of the elite d-men,” said Iginla.
