Second leak found after natural gas explosion rocks Regina Beach

SaskEnergy says a second underground natural gas leak has been discovered in Regina Beach. Matt Myers / Global News

REGINA – SaskEnergy says a second underground natural gas leak has been discovered in a community north of Regina where a similar rupture is suspected in an explosion that levelled a home.

The provincial Crown utility says the new leak in Regina Beach turned up overnight as crews were surveying gas lines for potential breaches following Wednesday’s blast.

Dave Burdeniuk, a SaskEnergy spokesman, says workers dug down to expose the leak at a point where three different mains connect, then allowed the escaped gas to vent into the atmosphere.

Burdeniuk says lines and connections in the entire community will be checked to ensure they’re safe.

The company says it appears shifting ground caused by summer flooding led to the blast, which didn’t injure anyone but also damaged about a dozen other homes as well as a post office.

A state of emergency remains in effect in Regina Beach as the survey continues, but gas service was expected to return to normal Thursday.
