Movember: who wore it best?

REGINA – Almost everyone has an opinion on what makes a good ‘stache.

“Keeping it crisp, keeping it clean,” said Regina resident Mageed Salem.

From the veterans: “When I started growing mine, it sure as hell wasn’t grey.” To the younger crowd: “I started mine right before moose hunting season.”

The question as the end November (and Movember) nears – who wore it best?

“I would go back to Walter Scott, the first premier of Saskatchewan,” said Dustin Duncan, the province’s health minister.

The halls of the Saskatchewan legislative building are full of some iconic mo’s, including Lieutenant Governors and politicians of years gone by.

Even today’s crowd is putting their best upper lip forward, including Duncan and deputy NDP leader Trent Wotherspoon.

Then there’s Regina’s former mayor. It’s been a rare day that Pat Fiacco has gone without a moustache since high school.

“The only one I’ve never had is the handlebar moustache,” Fiacco said.

You’ve got to have a role model for your facial hair. Some of the finest have shown theirs off on the football field, like Saskatchewan Roughrider greats Glen Suitor, Bob Poley or Dave Ridgeway.

Baseball had the fine handlebar of Rollie Fingers. Hockey had Lanny McDonald.

On the screen? None other than Tom Selleck, according to our not-so-scientific polling.

Though, at this time of year, it might be safer to defer to ol’ Saint Nick.

“It has to be Santa right? Santa’s moustache is something to shoot for,” said Santa Clause between photos with children at Northgate Mall.

If you think you belong on the Mo-Star Team, just be sure everyone else thinks so too.

“I had a moustache and a big beard once,” said one mall-goer.

“But the wife didn’t like it.”
