HALIFAX – Organizers are gearing up for a long-held tradition in Spryfield: the annual Santa Claus Parade.

The event is celebrating 41 years this holiday season, and parade co-chair Bruce Holland, who is also the executive director of the Spryfield and District Business Commission, said it will one of the biggest on record.

Holland said, on average, about 38 floats participate in the parade. This year, he said about 60 floats are involved.

“It’s just grown each year, every year,” he said.

The event draws huge crowds, which Holland said is indicative of the heart of the community.

“They are committed to such a long running parade that they come out every year, year after year, and put this parade on for the children and [look] how happy the children are on that day.”

“It builds community spirit here in the area and it shows that spirit,” he said.

Parade co-chair Gina Gray has been organizing the parade for a quarter of a century.

“We’ve seen the numbers go from a few thousand people out in the street to almost close to 10,000 people in the street, it’s fantastic,” she said.

Gray said the event is something for residents to be proud of.

“I guess commitment just from the community to be involved … It’s just a good feeling to have it, to be part of that.”

The parade takes place rain or shine Sunday at 2 p.m.

It will start at Herring Cove Road near Punch Bowl Drive and make its way to Spryfield Mall.
