VANCOUVER – A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attacking two men with a hammer overnight, in unconnected incidents.

Police say around 10:30 p.m. a 67-year-old Vancouver man was walking on the seawall in the area of Quebec Street and Terminal Avenue when a man approached him from behind and hit him in the head with a hammer.

He was knocked to the ground and was then struck in the head again and on the arm before a passerby came to his aid and the suspect walked away.

The victim was taken to hospital with a broken arm and lacerations to the head.

Then, just before 11 p.m., a second man was attacked at Main and East Hastings Street. The 49-year-old Vancouver man was also hit in the head with a hammer and was knocked unconscious. He was rushed to hospital in critical but stable condition.

On Monday, 27-year-old Tyrone Wayne Machiskinic was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

Police say he boarded a southbound bus, but they found him a short time later at Main Street and Terminal Avenue. When police tried to question him, Machiskinic ran to a nearby McDonald’s and hid in the washroom. He was then arrested.

Machiskinic was held overnight and had his first appearance in court this morning.

It’s believed mental illness and long-term substance abuse played a role in the attack.

Anyone with information about this incident, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact the VPD at (604) 717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
