Calgarians honour John Forzani at public memorial

CALGARY – It was standing room only at the Red & White Club on Thursday as Calgarians celebrated the life of John Forzani.

The former Calgary Stampeder and local businessman left a huge mark on the city, and his death has deeply impacted many people.

“I was playing golf with him in Palm Springs the day before he died,” said longtime friend Peter Johnson. “It’s hard to put it into words, when you realize there’s not going to be another golf game, there’s not going to be another phone conversation, there’s not going to be another dinner.”

“[He was] my go-to guy anytime I need some advice about the intricacies of football,” said Calgary Stampeders President Gordon Norrie. “It’s going to leave a pretty big hole in my life.”

One of the people hardest hit by Forzani’s sudden passing was his brother Tom.

“It was so unexpected… way too early,” he said. “Just straight out of the blue. It’s a difficult situation, there’s no doubt about it.”

He is survived by his wife and two children.
