WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has stripped five former cabinet ministers who publicly questioned his leadership of their ability to be involved with the decision-making of his government.

He says Stan Struthers, Erin Selby, Theresa Oswald, Jennifer Howard and Andrew Swan will remain New Democrats, but won’t be allowed to attend caucus meetings.

Clarence Pettersen, a backbencher from Flin Flon who had raised similar complaints about the leader, will be given the same treatment.

Selinger has been facing an open revolt from senior party members after leading the party to low polling numbers not seen in more than a decade.

He ran into opposition over his decision last year to raise the provincial sales tax, something he specifically said he would not do during the last election campaign.

The party has said it will hold a leadership contest at the party’s convention in March and Selinger has said he will run.
