429 Bomber Squadron

It’s was 55 years ago that Wayne King joined the Royal Canadian Air Force.

His most memorable moments were when he served as commander of the 429 Bomber Squadron, a unit that has enjoyed a special connection to Lethbridge since World War II.

It’s a relationship that formed in 1944, as it was common practice during the war that some of the group contingents deployed overseas were adopted by various cities across Canada. Those communities provided moral support and sent care packages to the troops.

The 429 Squadron was adopted by the City of Lethbridge, and it’s a relationship that remains strong. Today the unit continues to be active, continuing deployments overseas and providing support for disaster relief around the world.

“The association is one that signals to the members of the squadron that the Canadian public recognize the contribution of the squadron makes to our foreign affairs,” said King.

He explained it’s also important for the community to understand the significance of the historical partnership.

“The more the public are informed of the activities of the arms forces the better off both are in recognition of our domestic and foreign commitment.”
