Hurricanes playing like they belong

Even when he’s not on the ice, Hurricanes Head Coach Drake Berehowsky is still hard at work. Whether prepping for video sessions, or adjusting line combinations, the second year WHL bench boss is rarely far from the Enmax Centre. His team’s recent play is making the long hours, go by a lot faster.

“Life is easier, when you’re getting points.” Berehowsky said with a throaty chuckle.

The Hurricanes are finally starting to have some success, collecting ten points in their last seven games. It’s given the fans something to cheer about, and Berehowsky appreciates the effort his team is putting forward.

“I’m pleased with it. We’re very happy with the way the boys are competing, they’ve come out every night.”

“I think you guys are the only ones who think like that. This year is this year, and last year is last year.”

The Hurricanes are not going to overwhelm anybody with their talent, they certainly don’t have a bonafide superstar. And despite a nice run of late, they still rank in the bottom five of the western hockey league in both goals for and goals against.

But the ‘Canes believe if they hold true to their motto of putting the team, before the individual, they can succeed. A message forward Tyler Wong takes very seriously.

“On our door it says if you’re not willing to put the team first, turn around. That’s the motto we’ve embraced and that’s what’s given us our success.”

But if the ‘Canes are going to have any chance of competing this year, they’re going to have to continue playing at the level they’re playing at right now. With six of their next eight games at home, Wong likes what’s coming in November.

“It’s awesome to play at home. To be in your home rink, your home bed, it’s going to be a huge little stretch for us here and hopefully we can put up some wins and get some points in our home.”

The Hurricanes look to continue their strong play Friday when they host Swift Current.
