21 Ontario doctors have gender-based restrictions: report

TORONTO – A Burlington doctor has become the latest physician in Ontario to be restricted to treating male patients only due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

A report in the Toronto Star reveals a public register of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario listed 21 doctors under gender-based restrictions, including Dr. Sharif Tadros, who is accused of having sex with two of his patients.

In addition to the alleged sexual misconduct, the College said Tadros also smoked marijuana with a patient inside his office.

None of the allegation have been proven. Tradros, who was handed the restriction in September, is expected to face a disciplinary committee hearing which has yet to be scheduled.

The Star report said 16 of the 21 physicians with gender-based restrictions have already been disciplined for professional misconduct.

A representative for the College told the newspaper that sexual involvement with a patient is sexual abuse under the Regulated Health Professionals Act “regardless of whether the physician believes there is ‘consent’ from the patient.”
